Out here in the Void

Out here in the void
Deep black, like the inside of a burnt drive coil
Hear the siren song of a billion stars, the voice of one
Intertwined are our souls in the stellar web
No escape, no need, choice is never absent from our hearts
Burn away the distance between celestial bodies
We outcast from love of our Mother’s dirt
No use have we for the strains of gravity
No use for the atmospheres that choke
No use for the existence of the planet huggers
Burn farther the distance between us and them
They who look upon us with strangeness in their eyes
Bewilderment at our condition, yet so dependent
Still it is we who laugh free, free of confinement
We, who have our worlds too, like them
Hurtling through the abyss, our vagabond worlds
Thundering silently electromechanical, metal and synthetic
Fiery, our chariots of the gods
Our air conditioned, climate controlled, ride engineered,
self contained mobile homes on the highways of infinity
Citizenship possessed only of a lonely starship and its
     ports of call
Bear witness our existence, see too our dues
Our debts, paid in blood, in friendship, in pain, in joy
In excretions of the innumerable species of the eternal ether
Restitutions evidenced by the remnants of those who have
gone before that litter an unforgiving cosmos
Will you stare into the eyes of those ghosts, in whose depths
you would see that terrible price
Yet, still we jump for the next system, insisting that the check
     is in the mail
Still we plunge on, ignorant, or more likely ignoring oblivion
Searching ever for that treasure promised on the horizon,
more often only existing in our dreams
We’ve one foot in the grave and the other in a pile of
     something unpleasant
But not by force or coercion, but because we belong here
Because even when you’re going nowhere, at least you’ve
     got a destination
And for us, that’s enough to see us through the dark
So it’s second star to the right, and straight on till morning
Even as our stardrives burn away the night
Out here in the void
